Mostar is located on the banks of the Neretva River and is the cultural and economic center of Herzegovina. The city was named after the bridge keepers (mostari) who guarded the bridges over the Neretva and is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Neretva is spanned by the Old Bridge, which, together with the old town, has been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2005.
