Trains delivered

As part of the EU project, last train for urban and suburban transport has been delivered

All 11 electric multiple units (EMUs) for urban and suburban transport were put into service in December 2022, as part of the project Renewal of the rolling stock of HŽ Passenger Transport with new electric multiple units. The project is co-financed under the Operational programme Competitiveness and Cohesion 2014 – 2020. First trains for urban and suburban transport were put into service in December 2022.

Electric multiple units for urban and suburban transport, manufactured by the KONČAR – Electric vehicles production facility, have a maximum speed of up to 160 km/h. Trains are four-part low-floor compositions equipped with wheelchair ramps and bicycle storage. The   entire passenger section is under video surveillance. Urban and suburban trains have 8 doors on each side of the train. Most of the seats are singles, providing a capacity of 130 seating and 385 standing places. Along with visual and voice announcements at the stations and stops, passengers on board a train are provided with free internet access (WiFi). The length of the train is 75 meters. The train management system allows coupling up to three trains into a single composition, thus ensuring greater capacity. The usage of the regenerative braking enables power generation for train power feed, whereby excess power is sent back into power grid. The regenerative braking achieves return of 25% of total power taken from the power grid, enabling better energy efficiency.

The total estimated value of the project Renewal of the rolling stock of HŽ Passenger Transport with new electric multiple units is €171,725,103.72/HRK 1,293,862,793.99, whereas the amount of EU is €116,840,464.13/HRK 880,334,477.00. Given that the delivery of 11 trains for urban and suburban and 10 trains for regional transport is envisaged as part of the project, the production of regional trains that will be operating on electrified lines in the Republic of Croatia, that is, on the section Zagreb – Novska – Vinkovci – Tovarnik, Zagreb – Sisak – Novska, Zagreb – Koprivnica, Zagreb – Karlovac – Ogulin – Rijeka, Vinkovci – Vukovar and Zagreb – Zabok continues. In the second half of July, the first train for regional transport will be in service.

The project for the procurement of new trains is in line with the objectives of the Transport Development Strategy of the Republic of Croatia 2017 – 2030 and the European Green Deal, by means of which the European Union wants to encourage citizens to use rail transport more frequently as the most environmentally friendly and cost-effective mode of transport.

The new rolling stock of HŽPP will considerably improve the quality of service and contribute to the reduction of environmental pollution. In addition to lower operating costs and the possibility of increasing the frequency of train rides, citizens throughout Croatia will be provided with a more reliable, comfortable, and efficient rail transport.

By acquiring new trains, urban and regional connectivity and mobility is improved, thereby ensuring a more efficient and competitive rail passenger transport, which also contributes to the sustainability of the transport system in the Republic of Croatia.
